The Story So Far

The concept first formed, based on a  an industry-led disability network comprising of organisations in the West Australian hospitality and tourism sector.

2016

We recognised the importance of sustainable employment and its connection to social inclusion. A collaborative strategy was formed which respects, values and empowers people with a disability.

2017

We became an incorporated Association, governed by a board of industry professionals.

The Hospitality Disability Network pilot program was officially launched by Western Australian Deputy Premier and Minister for Mental Health, the Honourable Roger Cook MLA. 

 

Dec, 2019

HDNWA were awarded a Lotterywest grant to support and progress the vision of achieving sustainable long term employment opportunities for people with a disability

Dec, 2020

HDNWA has appointed a Disability Employment Manager to drive the organisation forward in achieving its vision

May,2021

HDNWA Awarded Department of Social Services grant as part of the Information linkages and Capacity Building Program, ‘Building Employer Confidence’

  • To build the confidence and ability of employers to hire, support and retain, employees with a disability; and
  • Help create inclusive workplaces by breaking down attitudinal barriers about people with a disability.
October, 2022

Celebrated our 150th candidate placement within our member network.

December, 2022

Creation and launch of E-Learning Modules to members to continue their awareness and confidence in working with a person with a disability. 

April, 2023

HDNWA awarded Department of Social Services grant for the WA portion of the national Tourism Local Navigator Pilot program to enhance ability and confidence in small to medium tourism business (SME’s) to hire persons with a disability. Create an employer guide ‘toolkit’ for this purpose. 

June, 2023

Successfully completed Lotterywest grant accomplishing all objectives, including employee placements, new members and e-learning module utilisation.

August, 2023

Achieved 60+ organisations as members of HDNWA

September, 2023

Launched Tourism Navigator Program employer guidance ‘Toolkit’ to a large group of members and personal representation by Hon. Angela Rishworth, Federal Minister for Department of Social Services and Don Punch, Western Australia Minister for Disability.

March, 2024

The goals of this industry approach to disability employment are

To establish a collective voice to raise awareness and lobbying in relation to disability employment;
To promote the hospitality industry as a pathway to employment for people with disability;
To reduce the gap in disability employment in the community.
To encourage the sharing of knowledge, resources and infrastructure for hospitality businesses;
